Boxhead Plastics closes loop on car bumper bar collection, recycling and remanufacturing
1 min read

DID you know that the Australian automotive industry consumes 196,800 tonnes of plastic annually? Only 3,800 tonnes of this plastic are recovered giving the industry a recycle rate of just 1.9%.

Bec Healy has made it her mission to change that very low recycle rate.

Healy is the Founder of Boxhead Plastics, an Australian owned non-profit enterprise turning waste plastic car bumper bars into useful and clever products.

Boxhead Plastics has recycled 2.6 tonnes of car bumper bars and sold over 30,000 golf tees.

“Our vision is to see every single scrap plastic car bumper bar recycled in Australia” says Healy.

It was back in 2015 that Healy first started tinkering around with plastics in her two bedroom flat in Redfern. This lead to her attending TAFE in 2018 to study polymer technology and it was there that she learnt how to manufacture with plastics and started trialling manufacturing with recycled plastic car bumper bars.

The Berowra local previously worked in local government for 15 years and in 2021 she took the bold step of starting a new business turning waste into want.

Healy now lives in Berowra with her 4 year old son and her husband.

In 2020 Bec graduated TAFE and launched her very first product, the Naiteev Golf Tee and in 2021 she launched the Autoplas program collecting scrap plastic car bumper bars and transporting them to a local recycler for recycling.

Now in 2022 the company continues to grow sales of the Naiteev golf tee and has launched another product, the Naiteev drink coasters.

Determined to continue on her mission, Healy has now commenced a Diploma in Sustainable Practices as Boxhead Plastics continues to grow customer base for the Autoplas program.
