Community Transport is Community Service

If you don’t know about community transport – you should.

It’s everywhere – Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai, Northern Beaches, North Sydney and Willoughby. It provides affordable, safe and accessible transportation for older residents who have difficulty catching public transport.

Community transport gives older residents independence to continue living in their own homes; gets them to their medical appointments, the shops and to catch up with friends. All they have to do is ring their local Community Transport office and make a booking for where and when they want to be picked up.

However, eligibility is required.  You have to be over 65 years of age and you need an approval from your My Aged Care provider or GP to receive this Commonwealth funded transport service.

Community transport also offers programs of interesting events and outings. I know this, because recently the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Community Transport brought a busload to enjoy an ABC Friends Northern Suburbs of Sydney meeting and luncheon at the Roseville Club. All this can be found on their newsletters. The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Community Transport’s newsletter, www.communitytransport.org.au/come-on-our-fun-outings/ includes outings to markets, shows, lunches, the cinema, exhibitions, shows and much more.

These enjoyable and relaxing events bring opportunities to meet new friends as well as peace of mind knowing you will be picked up and brought home safely.

Aging is a natural part of life, and it requires support. Community transport enables older residents to retain their independence and dignity by getting them where they need to be.  A great community service!
